Aldermans Tooling Ltd has expanded its manufacturing capabilities with the installation of a new collaborative robotic welding system, designed to improve consistency, efficiency, and throughput across medium to high production volumes.
The system centres around an EWM Titan XQ 400 Puls MIG plant, integrated with a Universal Robots UR10e robotic arm, and operated using an intuitive interface from Smooth Robotics. This advanced setup enables clean, repeatable welds with a high degree of accuracy and minimal setup time.
The investment was made in response to increasing demand for consistent, high-quality fabrication. While the robot’s weld time is similar to manual welding, its true value lies in reduced preparation time and the ability to maintain tight tolerances across large batches. The robot achieves ±0.1mm accuracy, ensuring each part meets exacting standards once a weld path is programmed.
The collaborative nature of the system also supports more efficient workflows. While the robot is in operation, team members can prepare additional parts or carry out inspections, helping to optimise productivity across the floor.
Capable of MIG welding mild steel, as well as stainless steel and aluminium, the system supports various weld types including fillet, butt, pipe, plug, and tack welds. It performs particularly well on batch runs of 50 units or more.
With a reach of 1300 mm, the cell can accommodate parts up to 1.5 metres in length depending on geometry. Aldermans also designs and manufactures bespoke jigs in-house, allowing for secure, efficient setups tailored to each project.
Thanks to the Smooth Robotics flange, engineers can guide the robotic arm by hand to teach weld paths directly—eliminating the need for complex code or offline programming. This makes deployment fast, intuitive, and adaptable.
The new system reflects Aldermans Tooling Ltd’s continued commitment to investing in advanced technologies that support its workforce and improve service delivery to customers.
