Taunton Fabrications has recently invested in a Leica Geosystems BLK360 reality capture surveying system as part of our continued commitment to improving accuracy, efficiency and coordination across our projects.

This investment forms part of our wider digital transformation journey, using technology to strengthen the link between site survey, design, fabrication and installation.

For complex architectural metalwork, accurate site information is critical. Staircases, balconies, balustrades, handrails and secondary steelwork often interface with existing structures, finished walls, concrete elements, glazing, cladding and other trades. Small inaccuracies at survey stage can lead to design assumptions, site clashes, rework and delays later in the programme.

The Leica BLK360 helps reduce that risk by capturing detailed 3D information from site.

The system works by scanning the surrounding space and recording millions of measurement points, which are then used to create a digital 3D point cloud of the building or area being surveyed. This gives our design team a much clearer understanding of existing site conditions before fabrication begins.

By bringing this information into the design process at an earlier stage, Taunton Fabrications can improve coordination and make better-informed decisions before materials reach the workshop or site.

The benefits include:

  • improved design accuracy
  • reduced clashes and assumptions
  • better coordination with the wider project team
  • increased confidence before fabrication begins
  • improved planning for installation
  • reduced risk of rework on site

This technology is particularly valuable where architectural metalwork needs to achieve a precise fit or high-quality finish. By combining accurate survey data with our in-house design, fabrication and off-site build capabilities, we can continue to deliver complex metalwork packages with greater confidence and control.

For Taunton Fabrications, the investment is not simply about purchasing new equipment. It is about improving the way information flows through a project, from the first site visit through to final installation.

As projects become more complex and expectations around quality, coordination and programme certainty continue to increase, tools such as the Leica BLK360 will play an important role in helping us deliver smarter, more accurate and more efficient solutions for our clients.
