Continuous investment in advanced manufacturing technology is helping BTS Facades and Fabrications deliver agility in increasingly complex architectural projects. At its purpose-built facility in Newton Aycliffe, County Durham, the company relies on a trio of TRUMPF machines – a TruPunch 5000 CNC punching machine, TruBend 5170 press brake and TruBend Centre 7030 automated panel bender – to support the efficient production of premium rainscreen façade systems and bespoke metal fabrications.

Established in 2009 with just a handful of employees, BTS has grown quickly into a specialist manufacturer employing around 50 people across design, engineering and production.
The company specialises in delivering bespoke metal fabrication solutions, with a significant proportion of its workload consisting of varied, custom and one-off projects rather than repeat production runs. While this flexibility enables BTS to meet the unique requirements of its customers, it also creates operational challenges, particularly when it comes to machine setup times and efficiently transitioning between different jobs.

To address these challenges, BTS invested in TRUMPF technology, helping to streamline production and improve operational efficiency. The advanced capabilities of the machinery have significantly reduced the time required to switch between jobs, enabling the business to move quickly and efficiently between a wide range of projects. This increased flexibility has made it easier to manage bespoke and low-volume work while maintaining the high levels of precision and quality expected by customers. As a result, BTS has improved overall productivity, maximised machine utilisation and strengthened its ability to deliver complex fabrication projects on time and to specification.

The TruPunch 5000 plays a central role in the manufacture of aluminium façade components, delivering the speed, repeatability and dimensional accuracy required for modern architectural systems. Meanwhile, the TruBend 5170 high-precision press brake equipped with automated tool changing and TruBend Centre 7030 automated panel bender provide the flexibility needed to produce complex folded profiles and intricate metal fabrications.

The process-integrated TRUMPF machines enable BTS to manufacture high-quality components efficiently while maintaining the consistency required across both one-off projects and larger production runs. A recent large-scale datacentre development, comprising more than 400,000 ft² of multi-level facilities, provides a strong example of these capabilities in action.

This demanding application required extensive façade manufacturing capacity, fast-track production schedules and consistent quality across thousands of components. BTS supplied its CWCT-tested Vantage® IP Plank rainscreen system, working closely with project stakeholders to ensure successful delivery.

“Datacentres place exceptionally high demands on façade systems,” says Phil Atkinson. “There’s no margin for inconsistency when producing components at this scale. Precision, repeatability and programme performance are all essential.”

Using its TRUMPF machines, BTS was able to achieve accurate and repeatable fabrication of aluminium façade components, including precision punching for concealed fixing systems. The equipment supported the efficient production of large panel volumes while maintaining dimensional accuracy throughout the project.

“The combination of advanced punching and bending technology allows us to manufacture complex façade elements with complete confidence,” he explains. “The consistency we achieve reduces production risk, supports installation efficiency and ensures we meet the exacting standards expected on major infrastructure projects.”

Alongside machinery investment, BTS continues to strengthen its wider manufacturing capabilities through BIM (building information modelling) integration, advanced 3D design software and ongoing workforce development. The company holds ISO 9001, ISO 45001 and ISO 14001 certifications, reflecting its commitment to quality and operational excellence, as well as environmental responsibility.
