As Carbon Border Adjustment Mechanism (CBAM) legislation continues to develop, The Alternative Steel Company want to share an update on how the team are preparing and how the company will support its customers.
UK CBAM is currently scheduled to come into effect on the 1st January 2027. While final guidance and legislation have not yet been published by the UK Government, The Alternative Steel Company are actively monitoring developments and taking steps to ensure we are ready well in advance.
Preparation
For some time now, the company has been working closely with its own supply chain to ensure CBAM data reporting requirements are clearly understood and that emissions data can be provided in the appropriate format when required. Alongside this, The Alternative Steel Company are putting internal systems and processes in place to ensure accurate, timely and compliant reporting can be facilitated once UK CBAM comes into force.
It is anticipated that UK CBAM requirements will broadly align with the EU CBAM framework, which came into full effect earlier this year on the 1stJanuary 2026 for non-EU origin imports of iron and steel. However, until final UK requirements are confirmed, it is not yet possible to provide UK CBAM data, as reporting formats and scope may still change.
Supporting EU CBAM Requirements
For customers supplying products into the EU and requiring data for EU CBAM declarations, The Alternative Steel Company are able to provide support.
By sharing order-specific information, such as order number, batch reference and / or delivery note details, the company can trace material back to the original production facility and supply the relevant EU CBAM emissions data promptly.
What This Means for Our Customers
“Our focus is on being prepared, informed and transparent. As CBAM requirements are finalised, we will continue to communicate clearly and provide the data and support our customers in order for them to meet their own obligations”
