There’s a massive paradigm regarding the path to follow: automation of a process and the production of quantities to make the activity profitable. The more we automate the process, the faster, cheaper, and more accurately a good is produced, but we are more exposed to the necessary increase in sales and the difficulty of changes in the product. The exact opposite happens if our process is less automated.
The challenge
Our customer is Advanced Custom Metal Fabrication, which specializes in designing and building aftermarket and customized bumpers and toolboxes for Pickups, SUVs, buses, Service Trucks, and Semi Trucks for commercial and personal use in the North American market. The range of vehicles, plus the possibility of customization, elevates the difficulties related to process automation, manpower intervention, production time reduction, and profit increase while keeping the parts solvable to an impossible task.
The solution
Considering the huge investment and the limitations of the plate-forming solutions typically used in mass production, the VLB Group I+D team developed a hybrid solution using our know-how in plate forming and tube bending. A double-head profile bender has adjustable tools that can be easily adjusted, adapted, or replaced to adapt to a new design. This customized solution replaces huge hydraulic presses and very expensive toolings.
